Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers

Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers are a classic regional dish that originated during the Great Depression as a way to stretch ground beef. Here’s a recipe to make them at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • American cheese slices (optional)
  • Hamburger buns
  • Butter or oil for cooking

Instructions:

  1. Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape each portion into a ball. Place them on a plate or tray and refrigerate while you prepare the onions.
  2. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a little butter or oil to coat the surface.
  3. Place the sliced onions in the skillet in an even layer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Take each portion of ground beef and flatten it into a thin patty, about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Place a handful of the caramelized onions on top of one of the patties, then place another patty on top. Press the edges together to seal, forming a stuffed burger.
  6. Repeat with the remaining patties and onions.
  7. Return the skillet or griddle to medium heat and add a little more butter or oil if needed.
  8. Place the stuffed burgers in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are cooked to your desired level of doneness.
  9. If desired, place a slice of American cheese on top of each burger during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.
  10. Toast the hamburger buns on the skillet or grill until lightly golden.
  11. Serve the Oklahoma Fried Onion Burgers on the toasted buns, with your favorite condiments and toppings.

Enjoy these flavorful and juicy burgers that are infused with the delicious taste of caramelized onions!
