Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients:

  • 4 large green tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for some heat)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Tomatoes:
  • Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch rounds.
  1. Soak in Buttermilk:
  • Place the tomato slices in a shallow dish and pour buttermilk over them. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes, allowing the buttermilk to tenderize the tomatoes.
  1. Prepare the Coating:
  • In one bowl, mix together flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  • In another bowl, place cornmeal.
  1. Coat the Tomatoes:
  • Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium heat (enough to submerge the tomato slices).
  • Take each tomato slice from the buttermilk, dredge in the flour mixture, dip back into the buttermilk, and coat with cornmeal. Ensure each slice is well coated.
  1. Fry the Tomatoes:
  • Carefully place the coated tomato slices into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  1. Drain and Serve:
  • Remove the fried green tomatoes and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  1. Season and Enjoy:
  • Sprinkle with a bit of extra salt while they’re still warm.
  • Serve with lemon wedges on the side.
  1. Savor:
  • Enjoy your crispy and flavorful Fried Green Tomatoes as a delightful appetizer or side dish!
