Ingredients:
- 4 large green tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for some heat)
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Lemon wedges for serving
Instructions:
- Prep the Tomatoes:
- Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch rounds.
- Soak in Buttermilk:
- Place the tomato slices in a shallow dish and pour buttermilk over them. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes, allowing the buttermilk to tenderize the tomatoes.
- Prepare the Coating:
- In one bowl, mix together flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
- In another bowl, place cornmeal.
- Coat the Tomatoes:
- Heat vegetable oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium heat (enough to submerge the tomato slices).
- Take each tomato slice from the buttermilk, dredge in the flour mixture, dip back into the buttermilk, and coat with cornmeal. Ensure each slice is well coated.
- Fry the Tomatoes:
- Carefully place the coated tomato slices into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Drain and Serve:
- Remove the fried green tomatoes and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Season and Enjoy:
- Sprinkle with a bit of extra salt while they’re still warm.
- Serve with lemon wedges on the side.
- Savor:
- Enjoy your crispy and flavorful Fried Green Tomatoes as a delightful appetizer or side dish!
