Cornbread dressing

Cornbread dressing is a classic Southern dish, perfect for holiday gatherings or any time you’re craving comfort food. Here’s a simple recipe to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 1 batch of cornbread (about 8 cups when crumbled)
  • 1 cup celery, diced
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 1 cup carrot, diced
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2-3 cups chicken or turkey broth
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Crumble the cornbread into a large mixing bowl and set aside.
  3. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the celery, onion, carrot, and garlic, and sauté until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Pour the sautéed vegetables and butter over the crumbled cornbread.
  5. Add the beaten eggs, dried sage, dried thyme, salt, and pepper to the bowl. Mix everything together until well combined.
  6. Slowly pour in the chicken or turkey broth, starting with 2 cups, and mix until the cornbread mixture is moistened but not too soggy. Add more broth if needed.
  7. Transfer the cornbread dressing mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  8. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  9. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  10. Once done, remove the cornbread dressing from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  11. Serve warm as a side dish alongside roasted turkey, chicken, or your favorite main course.
