Cornbread dressing is a classic Southern dish, perfect for holiday gatherings or any time you’re craving comfort food. Here’s a simple recipe to make it:
Ingredients:
- 1 batch of cornbread (about 8 cups when crumbled)
- 1 cup celery, diced
- 1 cup onion, diced
- 1 cup carrot, diced
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2-3 cups chicken or turkey broth
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 teaspoon dried sage
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Crumble the cornbread into a large mixing bowl and set aside.
- In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the celery, onion, carrot, and garlic, and sauté until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
- Pour the sautéed vegetables and butter over the crumbled cornbread.
- Add the beaten eggs, dried sage, dried thyme, salt, and pepper to the bowl. Mix everything together until well combined.
- Slowly pour in the chicken or turkey broth, starting with 2 cups, and mix until the cornbread mixture is moistened but not too soggy. Add more broth if needed.
- Transfer the cornbread dressing mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
- Once done, remove the cornbread dressing from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve warm as a side dish alongside roasted turkey, chicken, or your favorite main course.
Enjoy your homemade cornbread dressing with its comforting flavors of sage and thyme!
