Classic apple dumplings are a delightful dessert, especially during the fall season. Here’s a recipe to make them:
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1/2 cup cold milk
For the filling:
- 4 medium-sized apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled and cored
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 4 teaspoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
For the syrup:
- 1 cup water
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the cold milk, stirring until a soft dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently a few times until smooth. Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut the dough into 4 squares.
- Place an apple in the center of each dough square. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Fill the center of each apple with the brown sugar mixture, then top each with a teaspoon of butter.
- Fold the dough up around each apple, pinching the edges to seal and forming a dumpling.
- Place the dumplings seam side down in the prepared baking dish.
- In a saucepan, combine the water, granulated sugar, unsalted butter, and vanilla extract for the syrup. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Pour the syrup over the dumplings in the baking dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Serve the apple dumplings warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Enjoy the comforting and delicious flavors of classic apple dumplings!
