Ingredients:

For the Cabbage Rolls:

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground meat (beef, pork, or a mixture)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional)

For the Sauce:

  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cabbage: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage head and place the whole cabbage in the boiling water. Cook for about 5 minutes, then use tongs to remove the outer leaves that have softened. Continue boiling and removing leaves until you have about 12 large cabbage leaves. Set the leaves aside to cool.
  2. Prepare the Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and chopped parsley. Mix until well combined.
  3. Assemble the Cabbage Rolls: Take a cabbage leaf and place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center. Roll the leaf around the filling, tucking in the sides as you go, to form a tight roll. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and filling.
  4. Prepare the Sauce: In a separate bowl, mix together the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
  5. Cook the Cabbage Rolls: Spread a thin layer of the sauce in the bottom of a large baking dish. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish. Pour the remaining sauce over the cabbage rolls.
  6. Bake: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 1 hour, or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through and tender.
  7. Serve: Remove the foil from the baking dish and let the cabbage rolls cool slightly before serving. Serve them with additional sauce spooned over the top, if desired.
