Herb Spiral: Smart, Space-Saving Garden Design
Discover an easy and beautiful way to grow many herbs in one compact spot. A herb spiral uses height and shape to create different microclimates, allowing you to plant a wide variety of herbs even in a small garden.
Materials Needed
Bricks, stones, or recycled concrete (any sturdy edging material works)
Good-quality soil
Compost
Herbs of your choice
A small shovel or hand trowel
Optional: gravel for the center to improve drainage
Step-by-Step Method
Choose a sunny location for your spiral.
Mark a circle on the ground (usually 1–1.5 m wide).
Start building the wall of the spiral using stones or bricks, beginning from the center and gradually lowering the height as you move outward.
Fill the structure with a mix of soil and compost, keeping the highest point in the center.
Plant herbs according to their needs: drought-tolerant herbs like rosemary and thyme at the top, moisture-loving herbs like mint and parsley near the bottom.
Water gently and let the spiral settle.
Additional Tips
Add mulch between plants to keep moisture in and reduce weeds.
Use the lower, shadier sides of the spiral for herbs that prefer cooler roots.
A herb spiral can also be adapted for flowers, leafy greens, or pollinator plants for even more garden diversity.
